Conclusion
Baker
states that “When the library connects with young children and maintains a
relationship with families over time, it is much more likely to [encourage]
them to become lifelong library users. Effective programs invite children to
visit the library and use the services offered” (p. 21, 2017). Library programs
are much more than storytimes or teaching children how to read. They include
game nights, STEM events, seminars, conferences, etc. They are also not only for infants, toddlers,
and preschoolers; but for families, older children, teens, and adults. This
semester taught me so much about how programming fits into the whole goal of
the library and provides a way to reach and evaluate that goal. This assignment
has really made me think about what is involved in planning programs and
ensuring that they are successful.
Special Programs
Día de los niños, Día de los libros
This program is an annual
book festival celebrating children and motivating them and their families to
become lifetime readers. Libraries, organizations, readers, and educators come
together to share the joy of reading books and the importance of literacy
skills. The festivals can be held in libraries, schools, homes, parks on or near
the date of April 30th. Advertisement and outreach is very important
in order for Día to be successful. Different booths, speakers, performers,
activities, etc. are usually planned. Promotional items, books for giveaways,
and craft supplies must be ordered. Volunteers are absolutely critical to make
sure the event runs smoothly.
Staffing: committee members,
volunteers, speakers, performers, library staff
Assessment: This program
will be evaluated through the use of interviews. Various families, staff
members, volunteers, and individuals will be interviewed on their view of the
program. Examples of questions will be: what was enjoyable, what was not enjoyable,
improvements that can be made, suggestions for future booths, etc.
Game Nights
Game nights are a great way for families
to come together and enjoy spending quality time in friendly competition. Games
offered will provide a combination of physical and mental (educational) stimulation
and create an opportunity to exercise one’s physical and mental skills. There
will be a combination of board games, card games, puzzles, and active games
such as Uno, Charades, Chutes and Ladders, Twister, etc. Prizes will be awarded
to winners.
Staffing: All staff members
including volunteers are invited to participate.
