An information session for
parents/caregivers with children 0-8 years old. The focus will be on an
exploration of options to promote literacy training at home through reading,
writing, talking, singing, and playing. Childcare will be provided and every attendant
will take home an early literacy kit.

Offer basic
info: what early literacy is, when learning to read begins

Introduce each
practice: talking, singing, playing, writing, and reading. Give a brief
overview of how to promote the skill in a home setting. (First, introduce all
practices, then focus on one specific practice during each session.)

Create an early
literacy toy to take home.
·
Hand out early
literacy kits for each attendant. (books, book list, toys, take home activity
page, information from the session)

Justification: Goals are
for:

Parents to
understand that children need help preparing for literacy readiness. They will
realize how important it is to develop early literacy skills in children,
beginning from birth.

Parents and
caregivers will learn about the five early literacy practices: reading,
writing, talking, singing, and playing that can be used to help develop early
literacy skills.

Suggestions to
be given to parents and caregivers on how to prepare children for literacy
training at home.
·
Parents and
caregivers will be made to understand that the learning process should be
enjoyable for both parties involved.
·
The library will
be promoted as a place for early literacy training through resources, programs,
and the collection as a whole.
