Early Literacy Workshop

An information session for parents/caregivers with children 0-8 years old. The focus will be on an exploration of options to promote literacy training at home through reading, writing, talking, singing, and playing. Childcare will be provided and every attendant will take home an early literacy kit.
·      Offer basic info: what early literacy is, when learning to read begins
·      Introduce each practice: talking, singing, playing, writing, and reading. Give a brief overview of how to promote the skill in a home setting. (First, introduce all practices, then focus on one specific practice during each session.)
·      Create an early literacy toy to take home.
·      Hand out early literacy kits for each attendant. (books, book list, toys, take home activity page, information from the session)

     Staffing: main presenter

Justification: Goals are for:
·      Parents to understand that children need help preparing for literacy readiness. They will realize how important it is to develop early literacy skills in children, beginning from birth.
·      Parents and caregivers will learn about the five early literacy practices: reading, writing, talking, singing, and playing that can be used to help develop early literacy skills.
·      Suggestions to be given to parents and caregivers on how to prepare children for literacy training at home.
·      Parents and caregivers will be made to understand that the learning process should be enjoyable for both parties involved.
·      The library will be promoted as a place for early literacy training through resources, programs, and the collection as a whole.
